What are the new Swiss growth charts?
The new Swiss growth charts are national reference values for height, weight and BMI of children and adolescents and replace the previous WHO charts. They are based on measurements of more than 43,000 children and adolescents from all over Switzerland – about one in every 40 children.
- Height: Swiss children today are barely taller than 50 years ago.
- For weight, the old WHO charts ran too low: on their basis nearly one in five children counted as overweight – with the real Swiss data it is 13.5%.
- The previous WHO charts set the lower height limit up to 4 cm too low – growth disorders were therefore detected late.
